Islamabad: The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has rolled out drone surveillance to monitor traffic on the Islamabad Expressway and Srinagar Highway, marking the first time drones will be used as a primary enforcement tool in the capital.
According to Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Capt. (r) Syed Zeeshan Haider, the new initiative aims to reduce traffic violations, ease congestion, and enhance road safety by providing real-time monitoring of major routes.
Initially, drone surveillance will be restricted to these two key highways, allowing the ITP to fine-tune operations and evaluate its effectiveness. Plans are already underway to expand the program to additional high-traffic corridors in the coming months.
Authorities believe drones will offer a significant advantage over traditional enforcement methods, helping officers detect violations like lane cutting, speeding, and signal jumping with greater accuracy and speed.
The initiative is part of ITP’s broader push to modernize traffic management and improve commuter safety in Islamabad, which has seen rising vehicle numbers and frequent traffic bottlenecks.
Officials have urged drivers to follow traffic rules strictly, warning that violations caught on drone footage will result in strict penalties.
