Washington: In a significant diplomatic development, former U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had invited Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal General Asim Munir, to the White House to personally thank him for his critical role in averting a potential war between Pakistan and India.
Speaking to reporters following the closed-door meeting, Trump praised General Munir’s efforts and leadership, particularly in diffusing tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations. The meeting took place in the White House’s Cabinet Room, though journalists were not invited. However, during a later briefing in the Oval Office, Trump lauded General Munir, calling it an “honor” to meet him and acknowledging his key role in regional peace efforts.
General Asim Munir also addressed the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, stating that Pakistan has a deep understanding of Iran, especially under the current circumstances—perhaps more than many others. While he clarified that Pakistan does not have hostile relations with Israel, the country is carefully evaluating the situation. He noted that certain understandings have been reached, though Trump did not specify what those agreements entailed.
Trump also mentioned his prior meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing that, given the nuclear capabilities of both India and Pakistan, he believed it was vital to de-escalate tensions. He added that the United States is currently in discussions with both nations regarding trade agreements.
General Asim Munir has been in the United States since June 14, with the meeting at the White House being a pre-arranged highlight of his visit. Analysts in Islamabad are viewing the engagement as a major diplomatic achievement for Pakistan.
